A hillside accessory dwelling for a couple with a growing and extending family. Perched on a steep site, the structure and new deck create a floating flatform in the trees and adding 250 sf to the existing 1900 sf home. Guest bed, living, sauna and cold plunge maximize lot potential by activating the entire hillside.

Reconnecting the hillside home with the ground and expanding outward toward an expansive view of Mt. Tamalpais, this residential remodel reimagines the street facade of the home with a new entry terrace, entry, enclosed stair, new home office and expanded family room. The home filters light and privacy with an interplay of compression and expansion strategically organizing program to the view and the social atmosphere of the clients growing and energized family.

Horizontal expanses stretch across the face of the cliff aligning interior experiences with far reaching regional views. A vertical service core establishes the structural fulcrum for the wide hovering bars while acting as a manifold, interlocking the service and the served and integrating function and experience. The gathering level opens to a level garden, sheltered by the sleeping bar above and supported by the recreational bar below. Turning inward, a vertical atrium brings light deep into the cave-like spa, reflecting sun through water and illuminating the interior of the cliff. This grand proposal uses concrete and steel to achieve the perception of weightlessness.

The clients purchased the 2.5 Acre site and fell in love with the local ecosystem. Working with Ground Studio to fully understand the 4 major zones of the site, we integrated the building form as a lifted nest above the ground in the canopy of the trees. The building is oriented 15 degrees of south allowing for calculated overhangs to control the heat and light of the building while depending on passive cross ventilation and stack effect the double height atrium. The ground plane runs through the ground level of the building blurring indoor and outdoor experiences with large glass expanses, cantilevered floor plates and roofs, and a solar screen made of vertical louvres that camouflages the house with the rich natural pallet of the site.

This project is shaped by the natural forces of the site. Within a mid-century modern aesthetic under Japanese influence, this house creates two courtyards flanked by to wings of the house bisected by an entry bridge. The second floor wraps the west side of the rear courtyard to protect the outdoor area from strong wester winds. By acting as a barrier, the second floor can be cooled primarily by cross ventilation. Solar louvres clad the second level to control sun and to create privacy.

Radial Compound with 4br main house, 2 br guest house, pool, bathhouse, garage, metal shop, and wood shop. Project will be done in phases in an effort to use the shops for staging the main build. In this case the guest house would act as prototype for a repeatable module and detail across the project. The result are fanning wing forms telescoping across the contours of the site.

Hillside development for a family oriented wine country home that honored its history. A unique design process for unique clients with new found appreciation for something old. The resulting agrarian structures are going to be pre-fabricated in LA and lifted into place, on site. The buildings form encircle an open meadow for playing and viewing the vines designed in collaboration with Lutsko and Associates.

Kitchen renovation for private residence. Collaborative process with client in re-appropriating existing equipment in the face of shortages and delays. The result is a constrained white oak with 3/4” border frames to emphasize a rhythm. An earthy marble pulls out the browns and blacks in the white oak to make for a subtle but crisp insertion into the existing craftsman home.

20x20 is a scalable ADU from a single kit of parts. Developed for a property on the Oregon Coast, this 20x20 structure meets state requirements for ADU while minimizing the footprint. A self contained mechanical core holds the intelligence coupling the shower, the composting toilet, the hot water heater, and the cooktop into a pre-engineered module. The rest of the house is reconfigurable.

A woven cedar structure remains light and translucent with quad post columns and lattice infill. Value Engineering revisions sought an and even more efficient construction method resulting in a single splayed column, an architectural application of the material research on kerf cut timber.

Creekside Compound adds 1800 sf to a 1200 sf house. Converting a garage into an adu, and expanding and pushing up to a second level primary bedroom suite. A continuous trellis connects the parts and the new roof forms float above the horizontal datum. Working with the existing infrastructure and structure, this residential remodel project was surgical in its insertion.

The Gu Residence organizes the site with three stacked volumes. One for the living, one for the garage and utility, and the top bridging element as the bedrooms. The yin yang diagram captures a private rear courtyard with inward facing views for family and entertainment strategically situated for strong indoor outdoor connections through large sliding glass doors. The warm textures of bush hammered travertine and sustainably reclaimed Ulin siding emphasize the grounded volumes supporting the bridge element above. A bold yet subtle home that celebrates the site by opening space for living.

The floating fold house is located in Port Costa on a hill sloping north with a view over the Carquinez Straight. The concept for the house was to create a programmed retaining wall dug into the hilside with a floating roof above. Bathrooms, utilities, and kitchen reside in the thickened back wall while the open floor plan opens to the view beyond. The plan bends with the contours of the hill and the roof folds to mimic the rolling hills.

1200 SF redwood shade shade structure on the top of Mt. Sonoma. It was designed with precision engineering to withstand hurricane force winds for up 3 seconds. Integrated brackets and cross laced beams and columns create a rigid frame

Contour follows the contours of the landscape to terrace two molded bar structures into the hillside. Uphill are the bedrooms and the den. Down hill is the kitchen, dining and living room. In the middle is the outdoor living room. The levels of the house rise as the family member or visitor traverses from the bottom of the hill to the top of the site. The house is a journey. 

The structure is composed of long stone walls that extend into the landscape. Roofs span between the walls to create the rooms that are of the hill. Wood slats and fenestration puncture the stone walls for views and warming texture while the landscape is designed to pass through the house filling the space with wild beauty. 

The geometry is both gentle and rigorous, finding the right level of cut and fill to balance the site. Every corner is accounted for. Every inch resolved. 

Unfortunately the client abandoned the project. The approved design and lot are up for sale. We hope a new buyer will share this dream and the project can come back to life.

Boat house remodel on the Issaquah dock in Sausalito

Renovation and remodel of 1912 concrete and timber factory building for retail and residence for clients with extensive art collection. In an effort to preserve wall space, a pre-fabricated units from salvaged shipping containers where cut and stacked for a ship-in-the-bottle concept bed/bath below and office/terrace above. The stair was designed to further push the material efficiency of steel, bending a single 3/8 inch plate to a maximum 55 degrees for a modular build. The full build out included master bath, kitchen, radiant heating, and root deck. The pre-fabricated units and stair were installed in two days with a single hoist.
